One day last week I pulled up to a four-way stop in my taxi. At one of the other stop signs sat a police officer in a chase cruiser, and at the third, a telephone installer in a Bell Canada van. What made the occasion memorable was the fact that all three of us were women. We celebrated with much joyful laughter and raised thumbs.

The origami-inspired shape of Australia is rather nice — even though references to origami are only evident in the videos above and done quite lamely — and could have led to an interesting diagonal-line-heavy texture in the logo that delineated the South Australia state. Instead, the elegant shape is ruined by some sort of triple-framed door that starts to look like when you have two facing, parallel mirrors and all elements repeat ad infinitum. Except there is none of that sense of fun or wonder in this logo. Not even when the icon is used as a window, which is usually a fail-safe technique to save mediocre logos. The icon is then paired with some horribly uninspired, default-looking sans serif that comes in two flavors: Bold and super tight for “SOUTH” and light and extra spaced-out for “AUSTRALIA”. Neither execution works on its own and together they bring out the worst in each other.

Overall, this is an extremely under-developed identity that was good in concept but failed to reach any kind of potential.

Kaycie D. Illustrates Each Element of the Periodic Table as People:

Kaycie D. calls her thesis project Elements - Experiments in Character Design. In order to complete it for her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art, she completed a character design and factoid for each of the 112 named elements in the periodic table. And lest you think those elements have been written in stone, two elements that remained un-named when she finished her project in 2011 have been named since: Flerovium and Livermorium. With 112 drawings to choose from, it might not be surprising that it was hard to narrow them down to just a few for a post. But believe me, it was harder than even that. There’s some very cool designs in here, so you should definitely check out the tag page of her blog that features all of her elements.
